5 Common Commercial Areas That Need Cleaning More Regularly Than You Think

Regardless of the nature of your organisation and the specific operations which take place there, certain areas of the premises will be common and will always stand out as areas requiring special attention, and some of these might be more important than you think. In the current climate of high COVID-19 infections, it is particularly important to keep on top of routine cleaning and pay specific attention to key areas and locations, but as a commercial organisation the importance of cleaning can also have an impact on how your employees operate and, ultimately, the success of your business.

So we have identified the five key areas that are common to most commercial organisations, and which we think merit more attention than you might think they do.

Meeting rooms

This could be a simple communal office space, but can also be classed as a boardroom in some commercial organisations. Either way, it could be a room that is the public face of your business and be where visitors or customers are exposed to the standards of your organisation. So yes, you need to keep those standards high to reflect the quality and prestige of your business, but as a ‘public space’ meeting rooms can also see a high rate of germs and infections being passed around, purely down to the nature of the different people using the room. Furthermore, as these are communal rooms there is often a lack of personal responsibility in terms of keeping them clean and tidy, in comparison to someone’s personal office for example. It is very important that communal meeting rooms are given special and regular attention in a routine cleaning schedule.

Carpets

Whether your commercial organisation is fully carpeted or you simply use fabric floor coverings such as rugs in certain areas, it is important that they are professionally cleaned on a regular basis. Even a short pile carpet or rug can be a breeding ground for germs and infections which gather in the fabric, and of course these will not be visible. Large areas of carpeting will not necessarily look dirty to the naked eye, until you have them professionally cleaned. Only then will you see the dramatic change and understand the way in which dirt, dust and particles can discolour and infect a carpet, so don’t let your flooring get to that stage and have carpets cleaned on a routine basis.

Workspaces

Typically people do keep their workspaces tidy, and because we are all individuals we all work in different ways. Someone might be able to cope with a somewhat ‘chaotic’ system of filing where they swear they know where everything is, whilst another employee may prefer a minimalist set-up where a desk or workspace is clear and pristine. It is up to the organisation to set the standards of what is acceptable and for individuals to maintain them, but cleanliness is a slightly different matter. People spend a lot of time in their personal workspaces and this inevitably leads to the possible transmission of germs and bacteria, so all visible and non-visible areas of a workspace need regular anti-bacterial cleaning.

Storage areas

Again, these will differ by the nature of the organisation, but storage areas are another feature of a business which may suffer from being ‘no one’s responsibility’. Out of sight, out of mind is another commonly-used phrase for storage areas, but essentially, they can become a dumping ground where the standards of an organisations are not necessarily maintained as they would be elsewhere, and hence they should be subjected to regular deep cleaning.

Reception

Most organisations very clearly understand the importance of presenting a tidy and welcoming reception area, as it is the public face of the business and the first contact many people have with your organisation. But it is also an area which sees many people pass through it, and as the ‘entry point’ to the business should be where hand sanitiser stations are positioned. Of course this also means that reception areas should be thoroughly cleaned every day so that the transmission of infection from outside the organisation into it, and vice versa, is reduced.

When I hit 60, I didn't want a party. I wanted to do something that would actually matter. So instead of celebrating at home, I flew to Ghana and spent a week volunteering with a charity called Village by Village getting my hands dirty, sitting in open-air classrooms, and meeting some of the warmest, most resilient people I have ever encountered anywhere in the world. This is what I found there, and why I think you should know about it. The Charity Village by Village was founded by an old school friend of mine and has, over the years, evolved into something beautifully self-sustaining: it is now predominantly run by Ghanaians in Ghana. That is not an accident, it is central to the charity's entire philosophy. The approach is simple and powerful. Before a single brick is laid, the charity asks the village what they need, and what they can contribute. There is no imposition, no outside organisation deciding what is best for communities they don't understand. The result is genuine local ownership, stronger outcomes, and projects that endure long after the volunteers have gone home. The work focuses on two areas: education and healthcare. In the remote villages of Ghana that the government's budget cannot reach, Village by Village builds schools and medical centres from the ground up and then keeps them supported. What a Volunteer Week Actually Looks Like I'll be honest: I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was a genuinely physical, genuinely meaningful week that I will never forget. Most mornings began on a building site, mixing cement alongside professional local builders, plastering walls, shifting materials. I wore a bright pink polo shirt bearing the logo of my company, It's Clean, which helped fund the trip, and I got absolutely filthy in it. There is something grounding about hard physical labour in service of something real. There were also two young men — just finished their A-levels — who were wrapping up three months of volunteering. In that time they had helped build playgrounds and medical facilities with their own hands. Their energy, their commitment, and what they had achieved at their age was genuinely extraordinary.
