Using a Commercial Cleaning Service Versus Do-It-Yourself

Are you responsible for commercial premises such as offices or retail units? If the answer is yes, then maintaining the property and keeping it clean is an important aspect of your role. You’ll need to decide if cleaning is a task that you should undertake yourself, or if hiring a professional commercial cleaning services company is the better solution. Here is a comparison of the two options to help you make an informed decision about whether to hire cleaners or just complete the task yourself.

Time

The first comparison to make is that of the time it takes you to complete the task compared to cleaners. As professionals, a cleaning company is likely to be able to complete your office cleaning much quicker than you would be able to do it yourself. Also, if you’re spending time cleaning, it probably means that you’re not concentrating on other aspects of your organisation. By hiring a commercial cleaning services company, you’ll free up your time for other more important tasks. Similarly, you could delegate the cleaning to an employee, but this would take them away from their regular duties.

Money

At first, you may think that doing the cleaning yourself compares favourably in monetary terms versus hiring professionals to do it for you. Obviously, you can do it for free and cleaners will cost money. However, you need to consider the cost of time taken away from your main role. Will taking time out from your organisation impact on issues such as sales or profits? Will it affect your ability to run the organisation well and be successful? When you ask yourself these questions, you may realise that, in the long-term, commercial cleaning services are actually very cost-effective.

Quality of finish

The last factor to consider is who will do the job better. Even if you’re fantastic at cleaning, a professional service is likely to be better. They have a lot of experience of cleaning offices to a high standard, will use the products best suited to each task and they’ll know all the tricks of the trade to solve any complex cleaning problems. They will also clean in places that you might forget about, such as behind furniture and in other places that you can’t see. Opting for a quality service means that your offices will look and smell better, it will create an improved working environment for your employees and the premises will be much more hygienic.

When you have taken time, money and the quality of the finish into consideration, you may decide that commercial cleaning is the better option for you and your organisation. If this is the case, then

When I hit 60, I didn't want a party. I wanted to do something that would actually matter. So instead of celebrating at home, I flew to Ghana and spent a week volunteering with a charity called Village by Village getting my hands dirty, sitting in open-air classrooms, and meeting some of the warmest, most resilient people I have ever encountered anywhere in the world. This is what I found there, and why I think you should know about it. The Charity Village by Village was founded by an old school friend of mine and has, over the years, evolved into something beautifully self-sustaining: it is now predominantly run by Ghanaians in Ghana. That is not an accident, it is central to the charity's entire philosophy. The approach is simple and powerful. Before a single brick is laid, the charity asks the village what they need, and what they can contribute. There is no imposition, no outside organisation deciding what is best for communities they don't understand. The result is genuine local ownership, stronger outcomes, and projects that endure long after the volunteers have gone home. The work focuses on two areas: education and healthcare. In the remote villages of Ghana that the government's budget cannot reach, Village by Village builds schools and medical centres from the ground up and then keeps them supported. What a Volunteer Week Actually Looks Like I'll be honest: I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was a genuinely physical, genuinely meaningful week that I will never forget. Most mornings began on a building site, mixing cement alongside professional local builders, plastering walls, shifting materials. I wore a bright pink polo shirt bearing the logo of my company, It's Clean, which helped fund the trip, and I got absolutely filthy in it. There is something grounding about hard physical labour in service of something real. There were also two young men — just finished their A-levels — who were wrapping up three months of volunteering. In that time they had helped build playgrounds and medical facilities with their own hands. Their energy, their commitment, and what they had achieved at their age was genuinely extraordinary.
