It’s Clean Is Bucking Brexit Negativity

As many UK companies bemoan Brexit or sit tight until agreement day eventually dawns (if it ever does), it’s business as usual for It's Clean.

As a Harrogate and Leeds based commercial cleaning company, we are not seeing any signs of negativity, far from it. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, our Managing Director David Whan, says he is not content to “just wait and see”, he is even eyeing growth.

He said: “People ask if we’re preparing for Brexit but the answer is no! We have tremendous confidence in the Yorkshire economy and have recently completed a major refurbishment of our offices and training suite as well as recruiting two new full-time supervisors.

“Whatever Brexit might bring, we feel confident our focus on quality will always be in demand and we are backing ourselves and the Yorkshire economy with hard cash investment in additional people, fixed assets and training.

“Our new website and online videos are a window into the investment we are making in the focus on quality. In fact, we are so confident in our service level that we consider ourselves unique in offering a guarantee on the quality of our service, I don’t believe anyone else in our sector does the same.”

We have a steady and manageable growth of more than 10% a year which allows us to maintain our focus on customer service. Over the years, we have acquired other, smaller cleaning businesses when owners wished to retire or change career direction, and would be delighted to talk to anyone running a cleaning business who is in this position.

David added: “Some years ago when we broke through the £1m turnover barrier, we found the economies of scale helped us enormously so that we could create dedicated roles for training and customer management.

Our focus on people management has fuelled our growth and enabled us to create new jobs.

Being a Yorkshire-only business, we ensure the monies we earn are spent predominately in Yorkshire, as we are supplied exclusively by other Yorkshire businesses.”

David bought It’s Clean 12 years ago and he employs 120 people across Yorkshire. David said: “I am proud to say that we still have our first employee and several generations of employees from the same family because we look after and value our colleagues, which is perhaps why we retain over 97% of our customers each year.”

We have contracts with commercial offices, schools, event and exhibition venues, doctors’ surgeries, housing associations, dental practices, retirement homes, golf clubs, showrooms, retail outlets and warehouses.

David added: “Making the day-to-day environments of our customers, cleaner and easier to work in over many years, has meant we have earned their trust to provide a range of other facilities management services, such as washroom services, window cleaning, janitorial supplies and carpet cleaning.”

When I hit 60, I didn't want a party. I wanted to do something that would actually matter. So instead of celebrating at home, I flew to Ghana and spent a week volunteering with a charity called Village by Village getting my hands dirty, sitting in open-air classrooms, and meeting some of the warmest, most resilient people I have ever encountered anywhere in the world. This is what I found there, and why I think you should know about it. The Charity Village by Village was founded by an old school friend of mine and has, over the years, evolved into something beautifully self-sustaining: it is now predominantly run by Ghanaians in Ghana. That is not an accident, it is central to the charity's entire philosophy. The approach is simple and powerful. Before a single brick is laid, the charity asks the village what they need, and what they can contribute. There is no imposition, no outside organisation deciding what is best for communities they don't understand. The result is genuine local ownership, stronger outcomes, and projects that endure long after the volunteers have gone home. The work focuses on two areas: education and healthcare. In the remote villages of Ghana that the government's budget cannot reach, Village by Village builds schools and medical centres from the ground up and then keeps them supported. What a Volunteer Week Actually Looks Like I'll be honest: I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was a genuinely physical, genuinely meaningful week that I will never forget. Most mornings began on a building site, mixing cement alongside professional local builders, plastering walls, shifting materials. I wore a bright pink polo shirt bearing the logo of my company, It's Clean, which helped fund the trip, and I got absolutely filthy in it. There is something grounding about hard physical labour in service of something real. There were also two young men — just finished their A-levels — who were wrapping up three months of volunteering. In that time they had helped build playgrounds and medical facilities with their own hands. Their energy, their commitment, and what they had achieved at their age was genuinely extraordinary.
